P.S I'm a WOLF! (Paranormal Shifter Romance Book 1) Page 13
Janine was growing restless waiting in the house for the Stroian to come to their decision, but the high council was taking its time and driving her up the wall in the interim. All of the wolves that had gathered for the council meeting had gone off to hunt, and she was left to her own devices.
She had explored the house to a fair extent, not sure if there were places that she shouldn’t enter, but glad to take a look at all of the common rooms. After having looked at as much of it as she could, she decided to go outside and have a look at the grounds. From what she had seen from Kip’s balcony, they were stunning, partly groomed and partly wild, much like Kip and his family were. It was a sweet parallel to her.
Janine strolled out of the house into the area behind it, walking amongst the trees and bushes, loving that she was in a garden at the edge of a forest. It was almost magical to be there and to feel so connected to the earth and separated from the world of man. She could see why the Ardelean pack had chosen the mountain that they were on as a homestead for their family. It was paradise, and it felt perfect to her, the way she always thought that a home would feel.
She had taken her time and wandered out of the garden, almost away from the house when she felt it. The same icy chill that she had felt in her own home, right before she was attacked. She looked around with wide eyes as panic flooded through her, mingled once more with fear.
Janine saw nothing, but she could feel the presence of another wolf, of something cold and hate filled that wanted to kill her. It was almost a tangible feeling and it terrified her. She looked everywhere, keeping her eyes open, and still she did not see it, but the feeling was growing stronger within her. She knew that whatever it was, it was getting closer.
In an instant, the same giant wolf that attacked her before leapt from the hidden shadows of a bush at the base of a stand of trees, and she turned just in time to see it coming for her. She screamed at the top of her lungs, and in the next instant, she was down on the ground, flat on her back with the huge wolf looming over her, its fangs dripping with saliva, its eyes red and burning, and a deep growl of hatred sounding from within the beast.
She tried to struggle, but it was much too big and too strong for her to get out from under, and she knew in that moment that she was about to die, along with her baby. She screamed again, and suddenly the wolf took its eyes off of her and jerked its head up as if it was listening carefully for something. Its ears turned this way and that, as it turned its head and looked around. The great wolf sniffed the air and then growled deeply and angrily, and ran off straight into the forest, leaving her there unharmed.
Janine knew that it was unbelievable that she had been attacked twice and had lived through it both times. As she pushed herself up from the grass, two more wolves came and stood beside her, sniffing the area around them and poking their noses in the air, searching for the scent of the attacker.
They were ready to fight, but there was no trace of the wolf that had been there. Janine stood up and realized that the two wolves who were standing beside her in a protective stance were Andrei and Luca, and she was grateful. She hadn’t felt any fear at all inside of herself when they had bounded up to her immediately after the attack, and she knew instinctively that she could trust them. It was more help from her very special little unborn baby.
Nicholai came out of the house then and hurried to her. “Are you all right? Is the baby okay?” he asked worriedly, searching her face and her eyes for any sign of injury or pain.
Janine shook her head. “We’re okay. Shaken but not killed, at least this time.” She sighed then and looked into his wonderful, kind, wise old eyes. “I am afraid, though. It’s the second attack. I shouldn’t have survived either one of them, but here I am. I’m so scared that if the wolf attacks again, I won’t survive it. I would have been killed this time, except that Andrei and Luca were here so fast to protect me.”
Nicholai was deeply angered by the attack, but before he could say a word, Kip came out of the house and headed straight for them. “I know who it is,” he stated bitterly. “I went to Janine’s house and found this in the broken glass!” He held up the bracelet with the Dalca crest imprinted upon it.
Nicholai looked at his grandson with matched anger in his eyes. “Janine and the baby were just attacked again a few minutes ago. If Luca and Andrei hadn’t gotten to her so swiftly, she and the baby would have been killed!”
Kip’s eyes burned with fire as rage overtook him. “This is unacceptable! Janine, you come with me. I’m taking you to the Stroian. You will stay there until I return for you,” he spoke with a deep fury.
Janine’s heart was nearly beating out of her chest as she followed him quickly to the kennel just down a little hill. “What about you? Where are you going?”
“To battle,” Kip answered in barely masked rage.
Janine looked behind her and saw that Andrei and Luca were following them, and even Nicholai had all transformed into a werewolf. Kip walked Janine inside the kennel and took her straight to the Stroian, who were speaking.
They stopped when Kip approached them, and he looked at all of them. Eight of them were there, discussing the issues at hand, while king Grigor and king Nicholai were kept out of the vote for fairness.
“This is Janine, my mate. She is carrying my child, and she has now been attacked twice by the Dalca pack. I found this in the wreckage at her home, following the attack. We are going after them, as it is unacceptable to attack babies, children, or a female with child. I humbly request that you keep her with you until we return for her. She must remain safe.”
The Creole queen nodded. “She is welcome to stay, and she will be safe here.”
Kip thanked them and turned to Janine. “You stay right here, and you do not leave their sight. I will be back as soon as I can be.”
She shook her head as tears of fear filled her eyes. “I don’t want you to go! What if something happens to you?”
Kip shook his head in return. “There is nothing that you can do to stop us. This battle has been brought to our own doorstep, and now we are facing it and answering the challenge. I will not have you and my child in danger. Stay here in their sight at all times until I return.”
Janine had no choice but to agree. “Be safe,” she whispered as she reached for him and gave him a long, hard kiss. She let him go, and he went back outside to shift into a wolf and go with his family to battle the Dalca pack.
The Ardelean knew that they had the advantage of a surprise attack, but it broke their hearts to be battling against such old friends. Their families had been close for hundreds of years, and now it was culminating in a battle that would leave some or possibly even all of them dead.
The Dalca detected the Ardelean’s only moments before they reached the south house, and all of them came flying out of the mansion transformed into great wolves, ready to kill so that they would not be killed.
The battle raged on as wolves on both sides went for the death against their enemies. Bodies were bitten, fur was ripped, and bones were broken. They roared and growled at each other, biting and clawing, tearing and destroying, and it lasted until Grigor launched himself at Nicholai, closing his strong jaws against the old king’s throat, and killing him.
In the instant Nicholai died and his limp body hit the earth, all of the wolves stopped in their battle, and looked around at each other as if they were only just then realizing what it was that they were doing, and regretting it two moments too late.
Kip transformed back into a human immediately, weeping at the fallen body of his grandfather. He picked up the dead wolf and carried him away from the battle scene as his grandfather’s blood ran down his arms and his torso, down to his legs to his feet and to the very earth that he walked on. Kip wept all the way back to the main house.
Andrei and Luca transformed back into their human shapes and walked behind Kip, single file, step by step, until they were home again.
When they reached the house, the three men spent the r
emainder of the afternoon digging a grave for Nicholai and burying him in hit. The Stroian called a stay on their deliberation so that the Ardelean pack could mourn their terrible loss. The mourning lasted for three days, and at the end of the third day, the Stroian resumed their meeting, only to be interrupted by a new issue brought forth to them by the Dalca pack.
For the second meeting of the Stroian, there were twice as many wolves in attendance as there had been the first time, and Kip would not allow Janine out of the house. He insisted that she stay inside, preferably in his room, until the attacker could be found. She watched from the balcony, stunned at how many wolves there were in attendance, and realizing just how significant all of it was.
Inside the kennel, there was barely room to move, while outside there were more wolves waiting to hear what was happening than there were wolves inside watching what was happening.
The council sat at the platform, and King Grigor approached them. He cried out in a loud voice, “King Nicholai is now dead! Pack Ardelean has no king, no leader! Pack Dalca demands that the entirety of the Ardelean pack fall under our rule, since the prince hasn’t married the princess, and he hasn’t been cast out of his pack.”
Dimitri stepped forward then, and with a strong voice, he implored the Stroian to listen to him. “Consider another option!” his voice reverberated throughout the hall. “I am King Nicholai’s brother! Let me be the interim king until the decision is made regarding Prince Kipling.”
Kip felt anger shoot up in him and he walked to the platform, speaking louder even than his uncle, “This is preposterous! King Nicholai was my grandfather, and the throne is rightfully mine! That right is not contingent on whether I marry or not! That right is not contingent on anything, and as of the moment of the king’s death, when he was murdered by King Grigor, I was still in the pack Ardelean! I am still at this moment in the pack Ardelean, and I alone have the sole right and authority to the throne of my family! I demand that I be granted my right! It is no one else’s right or place to take!”
Fueled by anger and passion, Kip continued, and all eyes were on him. “I have evidence that the Dalca tried to kill my lover while she was pregnant with my child! An heir to the Ardelean lineage! Killing children is punishable by death!”
King Grigor growled loudly and shook his head. “Pack Dalca have made no such attempt on the human woman! There can be no proof of it because we did not do it!”
“You did attempt it twice! Once at her home and once here on the very grounds outside of this hall!” Kip shot back at them. “It is for that reason that we fought you, battling you on our grounds!”
The Creole queen stopped them with a sharp howl, and everyone looked at her. “We shall decide upon the situation at hand now!” She turned and looked at the other members of the Stroian, minus Grigor and Kip.
“All in favor of giving Kipling the throne! Speak!” The Creole queen’s voice was loud and strong. Every one of the wolves howled their approval. Kip was stunned to see so much support from them.
“All in favor of dismissing the unification agreement between pack Dalca and pack Ardelean, speak!” the Creole queen called out. Every one of the wolves howled their approval.
“It is unanimous then! King Kipling, take your rightful place amongst your peers as the newest member of the Stroian!” The Creole queen bowed her head to Kip, as all the other wolves did the same in turn, including King Grigor who knew that he had been beat.
“No!” Came a shout from the wolves watching. “I will not stand for this! I will not have it!”
Every wolf in the hall turned to see who was opposing. Dimitri stepped forward and approached the podium. “It was I who attacked the human woman, because it is a horrific abomination to mate with a human, and worse yet to conceive a child with one! You cannot give the throne to this failure of a prince! He has disgraced wolves all over the world by committing this transgression!”
The entire Stroian stared at him and Kip felt as if he was ready to rip his own uncle’s throat out. “You admit to attacking the woman and to setting up pack Dalca to take the fall and responsibility for it?” The Creole queen demanded of Dimitri.
He could not lie; every wolf in the room would be able to smell it and sense it if he did. “Yes!” he called out. “Yes, I did those things, to stop this from happening! She has no place here, and he has no place on the throne! That throne is mine!”
The Creole queen looked around at all of them. “All in favor of expelling Dimitri from the Ardelean pack.” Her voice was solemn as they all realized just what he had done.
It was a unanimous decision, and it was immediate. “Dimitri, you are hereby banished form pack Ardelean. Never show your face in the Olympic region again.”
Dimitri left then, shamed and exiled.
Kip looked at the masses and he saw that Luca had come in with Petra at his side, looking very much in love with each other, and Andrei had brought Janine into listen; him being in his human form so that he could translate for her.
“I hereby declare that any werewolf may mate with any human in the Olympic region.” Kip called out to the hall.
All of the other regions called into being the same new law, and before the wolves left, it was accepted nationwide for unity between humans and werewolves.
Kip transformed into his human self and went to Janine. She embraced him tightly, and he kissed her softly.
“There is nothing in our way now. Marry me, and be my wife. Start the family that you have always wanted with me. Let me be your husband, your family, always.” He gazed at her with his heart in his hands.
“I would love nothing better than that.” She kissed him, and he kissed her in return.
“If you want me to, I will turn you on the next full moon and we can spend the coming centuries together,” he offered, looking at her hopefully.
“Please… yes, please,” she told him with a relieved grin. “I want all the time with you that I can have.”
He smiled. “Your wish is my command, my queen.”
